• Singapore faces a shortage of engineers - 24Nov2012

    SINGAPORE: Singapore faces a shortage of engineers, according to a recent job vacancy study by the Manpower Ministry. One way of attracting more youths to the profession is to encourage them to see it as a viable and attractive career while another approach is to attract more women into engineering. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) recently held an outreach program to reach out to the fairer sex. "We really need excellent engineering skills. Why would we omit half the people with these excellent skills?" said Professor Janie Fouke, who is Dean of Engineering at Nanyang Technological University. Why would we omit half the people with these excellent skills?" said Professor Janie Fouke, who is Dean of Engineering at Nanyang Technological University. She added: "People need quantitative skills. They need spatial skills, they need to understand three-dimension, they need to understand math. But I think in today's world, they also need to understand how to articulate their thinking. So they need skills that have to do with developing slides, communicating to the public. And I don't think those skills are gender specific." At the outreach programme, women engineers shared how their inherent traits can be an advantage. Dr Guo Huaqun, who is the chairperson of IEEE Section Women in Engineering said: "First, ladies are more careful. They pay attention on the detail about specifications and design. Second, ladies can be a good listener. They can listen carefully about the requirements from customers. Third, ladies can be well-organised. They can document all files properly. Finally, ladies can be a good team player. If a whole team have a lady engineer, then the whole team will become more excited and more energy." The women engineers also felt that the course, while demanding, would open many doors. Susan Li, a technical support manager at Agilent Technologies, said: "Within Agilent, we have females who are in the R&D department research and development, and we have females that have ventured out into doing sales, meeting customers and closing deals. And we also have females who go into marketing, organising seminars and events like that. We also have females like myself who are into management." Still, the importance of having aptitude for the job was strongly emphasised. Professor Fouke said: "The basic requirement that anyone needs to excel in engineering is strong math skills. It's very important to have strong math skills." Students who attended the outreach program said they welcomed such talks as they allow them to learn more about the profession. "In most secondary schools, we don't get this much opportunities to have these kind of talks to understand better about engineering. And now after this talk, I could finally understand that actually girls and boys could just take up any engineering course," said Kok Yu Xuan from Commonwealth Secondary School. Syahirah Bahruddin from Swiss Cottage Secondary School said she "felt more empowered that she can do engineering" after going through the program. Another student, K Vanita from Raffles Girls School said: "I think there are very few female engineers but those who have the will will definitely go far in life as I've seen in today's programme."
